Can Green Card Holders Travel To Canada? Find Out The Possibility

There are many exemptions made by the Canadian authority about foreign nationals travelling into Canada, this however depends on the country of residence of the traveller and the kind of travel document he/she possesses. A green card can be used to travel to Canada but this depends on other factors which this article will give in detail.

CAN GREEN CARD HOLDERS TO TRAVEL TO CANADA?

The green card allows one to work and reside in the U.S. for years and grants access to other amenities in the host country. However, moving to another country with only the green card as a travel document is a question which is asked by many.

What is a Green Card?

The green card also known as a permanent resident card is a document issued by the United States of America that allows one to permanently reside and work in the U.S.

Can Green Card Holders Travel to Canada?

Yes, green card citizens in the United States can travel to Canada using their green card as a travel document. This is because of the eTA programme introduced by the Canadian Authority in 2016.

This policy exempts some countries from the use of a Canadian visa to enter the country. Through the eTA green card holders can use the green card as the only travel document when travelling to Canada. However, it depends on the mode of transport involved.

What is the Electronic Travel Authorization(eTA)?

Electronic Travel Authorisation is a travel entry requirement for visa-exempt countries’ nationals travelling to and through Canada by air. Some countries are excluded from using visas to enter the country, however, their citizens are expected to use the eTA when travelling by air. This system allows them to use their valid passports and green cards to enter the country.

Which Country Can Use the ETA System?

The U.S. is a country that is exempted from the use of visas to enter Canada and the citizens can use only their valid U.S. passports to travel to Canada. Green card holders and permanent citizens of the U.S. can travel to Canada without using visas while using land or sea transport systems, however, they need to obtain an eTA when travelling by air.

Are There Any Restrictions In The eTA System?

The eTA system only restricts a holder with an incorrect passport number from entering the country. Any passport without a correct passport number will be rendered invalid and the holder will not be allowed entry into the country.

What Other Ways Can a U.S Citizen/Resident Travel to Canada?

Travelling to Canada from the U.S. is very easy as both countries share several miles of borders. If a U.S. resident or citizen is to move from the States to Canada, they could either use the land, sea or air transport.

Using land and sea transport does not require any other travel document apart from the green card but using air transport would require an additional document such as a valid U.S. passport.
